We were celebrating the 100th anniversary of our church, and several former pastors and the bishop were in attendance.

At one point, our minister had the children gather at the altar for a talk about the importance of the day. He began by asking, "Does anyone know what the bishop does?"

There was silence. Finally, one little boy answered gravely, "He's the one you can move diagonally."

An alternate answer could be
What does the bishop do?
He's the one who prays in Mommy's bedroom when daddy is at work
Prays in the bedroom?
Yes mommy kneels down and he shouts "Oh god" over and over again.

I sense a good future for this grave little boy! 🙂

But then we never had knights prancing about in their peculiar manner.

What were the original Chinese pieces called? Ah, I looked it up. Chess actually originates in India. The Chinese version was more like Go, moved along lines not squares and was 9 across not 8 plus having a river.

That is a curious mind..

And in the early Indian version, there were four players, which is why the two sides are made of two nearly matching halves, and each player has two of everything. While one of the kings became first a Vizier and then a queen.
