A nurse in Rhode Island was attacked by a patient this month while at work in the psychiatric ward of a hospital. The nurse was not breathing after he was attacked. He is in a coma in intensive care.
1 in 4 nurses have been assaulted at work. The likelihood of health care workers being exposed to violence is higher than prison guards or police officers!
Please urge your U.S. elected officials to support the Workplace Violence Prevention for Health Care and Social Service Workers Act (US Senate Bill S. 1176, House Bill H.R. 2663).
Use the form here to send a quick email, or better yet, call your legislators and urge them to sponsor and pass this bill to protect health care workers from violence in the workplace.
As a corrections officer who has worked with dozens of nurses, I'm very sensitive to this issue. Nurses are frequently assaulted because they're "soft targets", so to speak. It's unacceptable. In my state it's already against the law to assault or abuse a prison employee, it brings an added 5 year sentence.
I might quibble with their being "more frequently exposed to violence than officers", but it all depends on the definition I guess. Nurses aren't very often involved in breaking up fights etc. but they do have to deal with the aftermath.
