I went to Walgreens to pick up some OTC allergy medicine. Everything was normal. As I was walking out I remember how I was thinking about being an eternal soul rather than an ego. I was being the observer.
As I walked out of the store I noticed a raggedly dressed white woman probably in her 40's standing against the wall of the store. It seemed she may had been crying but I looked away swiftly. I'm reminding myself to mind my own business.
As I approach my car door I hear the woman cry out “Excuse me sir!” while crying. She starts telling me how she's had nothing to eat and asking if I have a dollar. I turn and walk up to her. I look in my wallet and I have 4 of them.
I look at her and I can barely bare to do it. Her face is scrunched up in pain and agony as she cries. I say to her “Tell you what, I'll be right back”. I go back into Walgreens to the ATM and withdraw $40. I walk out and hand it to her. She begins to fall to her knees. I get closer and say to her “Come here”. We embrace and I tell her repeatedly everything will be OK as she continues to cry. She exclaims “Thank you Jesus!” several times and then says to me “God Bless you”. I say to her “God Bless YOU!” I get in my car and drive off. Tears roll down my face as I drive home.

You did the right thing. We all have vice's, who are we to judge. I've given money to some and just hope they use it wisely and if they do buy drugs, I hope they don't overdose.
I have invited some inside a restaurant and have bought them a meal and have invited them to eat with me and hear their stories about what led them to this point, most are not alcoholics or drug addicts, just homeless veterans that have no where to go. They might have lied to me but that's the stories that they told me, I don't judge, just hope the best for them.

@FvckY0u Thank you, I try to be non judgemental, I fuck up at times.
People like that are a tough call, as to what to do. On the one hand, your heart was certainly in the right place, and you showed her compassion. On the other hand, the other commenters have a point as to whether she took advantage of you to feed her drug habit or whatever, instead of using the money to buy food, and that by giving her the money and going away, you relieved her of accountability and made it easer for you to feel good about yourself without having to stay with her and give her some added time and attention. But for all they and I know, you may not have had the time to hang around with her. Only you know that, so I am reluctant to judge you. But again, you at least have a generous, caring heart, same as me, when I gave all of my first Covid relief check to my local food bank, and then most of my second one, as well, because I knew it would go to help truly needy people, and that they needed it way more than I needed the money
And BTW, Tejas is an asshole that I blocked long ago, so whatever he had to say, I wouldn't care at all about it, if I were you...

@FvckY0u if you must give homeless people money give them gift cards. I deal with homeless all day everyday. Stop pretending to be an expert on everything when from what I can tell you have the brain capacity of a 12 year old girl. Drugs help homeless people cope and certain drugs make them not hungry. You don't even know the basics on most things you talk about, but have the nerve to call others stupid. Fucking priceless!

What @annewimsey and @Tejas are telling you is homeless &/or destitute people are frequently in the position they are in because they continually make poor choices. Making sure they have a meal by giving a meal verses cash to them is a good idea.

They threatened to kill his dog that was in the car if he didn't listen. Bad shit happens all the time. It's better to be prepared than not.
