call me a dumb tourist but is 'bear spray' a thing? I don't want to be that close to one to have to spray it.

I think it's the same thing as bear mace — but, agreed, better to not need it at all, if possible.
Yeah in the warm months, especially out West, it's standard backcountry gear. It'll shoot 30' (?? km) though. No need to get close.
