The other evening I was driving on the expressway at 70 mph. It had gotten pretty dark out, and I noticed the car in the next lane had not turned on his headlights. So I got behind him and flashed him a few times. He gave me the finger.
Ok dude, it's your problem now.
The opposite is the when another driver does something utterly stupid, and when you try to point it out, they smile and give you a little salute, as if that makes everything fine and all is forgiven
Stephen Potter author of the Oneupmanship series of satirical self help book called this ploy
"Plaste’s placid salutation."
Plaste invented a means of getting himself through the most outrageous driving behavior by a placid salutation.
“In essence, this was a simple raising of the hand, an inclination of the head, and a grave smile. Instead of a scream of rage one would expect from the oncomers, they would actually salute back.”
I was driving on a 4-lane in my ancient tiny RV in western NY state when I saw a gorgeous '57 Chevy in turquoise & white up ahead...then I noticed it was on fire underneath.
Pulling up alongside I honked and gestured and yelled....the (I think) father & adult son inside waved and acknowledged my admiration of their lovely vehicle, paying no attention whatsoever to me other than smiles & waves.
This went on for several miles, until they looked back and saw huge plumes of smoke and sparks following them.
I too had pretty much given up on them, too much work & dangerous driving to try and save clearly oblivious fools.....
You can only do so much at 70 mph I'm glad they finally figured it out.
Dangerous! There have been cases of people being assaulted for exactly this. I still blink once at cars coming towards me in twilight. But you have to be careful.
If I try to capture someone's attention in that situation the first thing I flash is the peace sign. Then further gesticulations can proceed. You really do need to be careful in such situations.
Yes you do. People are pretty paranoid these days.
@Barnie2years I had that happen to me, the dude behind me was pissed and tailgating me very close, he started honking at me at a stop light, I flipped him off and he got out of his car and started approaching my car. I kept flipping him off and smiling, light turned green and I drove off! People are so easily triggered nowadays.
