Are you stubborn enough to hunt down what you want?

I wanted a Thai snack often sold by roadside vendors..banana/berries/sticky rice mashed together and roasted in a roll of banana leaves.

The problem is that this type food is only sold at certain times of day in certain places by certain people, and it can be random.

I headed down the street this morning at 7 AM a few blocks from my place, to where I bought some yesterday, but today the vendor was missing.

Never mind. I had to go downtown at noon to deliver parts to a repair shop, so afterward I headed to the last place I'd seen them for sale, near the marketplace, but the vendor said she was out.

I then began going shop to shop, vendor to vendor, near the marketplace, asking where they were selling the banana rolls. I got many answers..late tonight they will be sold two streets over, etc.

People pointed in various directions, and I did a lot of walking in vain, but eventually, one lady seemed positive she knew, telling me a lady was selling some one street over around the corner.

I went over there, and sure enough!

I bought two of them and since all the benches in the marketplace area were in the sun, I sat on the steps of one of the department stores, in the shade. The door was open so I was also getting the AC air on me..nice!

I'd just bitten into my delicious banana/berry/sticky rice roll when a Thai lady my age followed my example, sitting down near me on the steps with a bag of watermelon.

This is unusual for a nicely dressed Thai woman to do, but we chatted pleasantly while eating lunch. I began to suspect she thought I'm Thai, but luckily, I understood her and held up my end of the conversation.

I snapped some photos of the banana roll snack yesterday, and the little sidewalk food vendor place near me in Songklha, Thailand.

Photos:

  1. three sticky rice/banana rolls on the vendor's food table

2.sidewalk cafe where I was just eating the rolls, showing the pitcher of water I was drinking

3.the unwrapped sticky rice roll

4.a roll, after I took a bite, to show the banana and berries inside

5.tray of snacks for sale, including two banana leaf sticky rice rolls in the bottom left corner

The best bit of going from to Malaysia to Thailand is the return of sticky rice breakfasts.

I am very tenacious and have dozens of examples of tracking down what I want. One example was a few months ago when I tracked down a client. She had evaded several others that had tried to find her, and I wasn't having it. I did a lot of ground work asking various people about her whereabouts, and I finally found her. She wouldn't open the door to talk with me, and I warned her that I would come back with the police. She still refused to talk to me, so I requested police backup. She was absolutely astounded when she opened the door to the officer and me. She was surprised at the lengths I took to try to help her. This was a turning point in our relationship, and she finally realized that I was there, that I cared and I wanted to help her. She took the help and things turned around for her substantially.
