It's a bank holiday weekend I'm off work and my toilet has sprung a leak! Typical, now waiting for my insurance to get back to me with a towel wrapped around the loo! It was going so well, I cleared out my garage did 3 runs to the dump. I even bought ice cream for the guys at the dump! Hope everyone else is enjoying the glorious weather!

Why are you getting your insurance involved? If it's your house, call a plumber and get it fixed. If it's not your house, call the landlord. That's what we'd have to do in the U.S. I would get my insurance involved if it had leaked while I was on vacation and fell through a rotten floor, but for a standard leak, it's all on me to fix it.

Sorry to hear. Would you answer a question for me? Where did the word 'loo' come from?

It comes from the French "Gardez l' Eau" it's what people used to shout out of the window as the chamber pot was emptied each morning into the street below. Roughly translated it mean " watch out, water" of course in modern Europe we no longer have open sewers in the streets. But language, like shit... sticks!

Very interesting origins. I like them all! Thank you for the information.

Where exactly is the leak? I'm a master builder (no not masterbaiter that's fishing) and it may be a simple fix. It could be that the fitting is leaking at the thread or that the valve is stuck which is also an easy fix. Plumbing is pretty straight forward and simple to work on most of the time. If you have the water turned off already then there isn't much to worry about but you could save yourself a bunch of hassle this weekend (ie. flushing with a bucket from the kitchen sink) if the problem is straight forward.

@Josephine that's a wax seal and sometimes it will leak if the bolts on either side of the base of the toilet have come loose, other times it has just failed and needs to be replaced. Check to see if the nuts have come loose and snug them down with an adjustable spanner but not too tight or you could break the porcelain. If that doesn't work then the wax seal needs to be change and you should leave it to the plumber.

OH, HELL! I'm sorry! If it's any consolation at all...it happens to all of us. (I'll bet the guys at the dump like you a LOT!)
