After growing up in religion, I understand why religion is opium. I used to be the center of the world... Even every red light that I hit was meaningful and controlled by a higher being.
But now I live in a cold and randomly cruel world. My dead loved ones aren't waiting for me anywhere. So, I understand why people desire to look to something higher in order to feel better.
Being a religious person who left faith and can no longer ever be a religious person, I understand why it feels better to think that you know the way, the truth, and the life... Some people would prefer this "opium" to the cruel, random reality that is human life.
Your situation is understandable. You must feel like an orphan. I hope that real life showers you with many rewarding experiences.

Happy Birthday, Karl Marx. You Were Right! NYTimes Opinion
[nytimes.com]
I must admit that I was absolutely flummoxed to see Karl's name on the NYTimes ... My first and perhaps last vote went to the DKP (German Communist Party) ... Though I had no real affinity for the communists... I was young and stupid and brainwashed.
