I have not read his book the "Satanic Verses" for which the Iranian clerics issued the fatwah for his killing. But I saw in India's largest literary festival years ago that many acclaimed speakers said the this book was poor work of literature.

His book Midnight's Children in 1981 was mediocre and all fame belonged to his notoriety from Satanic Verses in 1988. A bold writer for challenging authority and deep rooted beliefs? yes. A great writer? no. I have some respect just because he criticized religion.

Thanks...it was shown here and I admit to shedding a tear or two. If you've ever been lucky enough to see him ''live,'' and hear his thoughts, you'll know why I found him so engaging, witty and (I know..this sounds odd...somewhat sexy/vital.) Fricking religious fanatic nearly killed him. Bastard!
