Nietzsche was way ahead of his time on that one. Never underestimate the influence of group stupidity and ignorance.

You join a group, in part, to be able to abandon your personal responsibility, and that means choosing one that sets lower standards than you would set for yourself.

Yes, groups allow for a person to feel a "diffusion of responsibility". Meaning they can feel less personal responsibility.
