One of my students misspelled "medieval" as "Mid-evil" throughout his term paper. I spelled out the misspelling to the person Including the hyphen) and she said, "Oh that's funny--he didn't know that 'midevil' doesn't have a hyphen?"
I blanched inwardly and moved on.
