Some time ago I wrote about seeing an upside US flag in someone’s yard at the home of an obviously wealth inhabitant in the county seat town, Friday Harbor, of our island archipelago. I had thought this was a protest against over the over-hyped patriotic flag symbolism. I was wrong. [yahoo.com]
An upside down flag is a sign of distress. My understanding is it comes from sea faring days as a way for a ship in distress to notify others. Pirates used to do it to attract unsuspecting ships who were then attacked. Here are the Australian protocols.
