Christians have been trained since childhood to check their brains at the church door, so it's an automatic reflex.

Besides, the church cultivates fear of hell and hatred of "sinners" to keep their congregations coming back, and donating money, of course. Trump is just using the advice of Machiavelli's "The Prince" to gain power- accusing a common "enemy," (the liberals, blacks, Muslims, the LGBTQ community, etc.) and frightening people to keep them in line, exactly as the church does.
