Much of the science of the Greeks was burned by the early Christian church, and the records held by Muslims and the Eastern Orthodox churches were sparse and not so well know known until the renaissance, when they were "rediscovered". So the flat earthers didn't have much to dispute them as most of the European population for over 1,000 years were mostly illiterate.
