Sports (Paris Olympics). In 2000 I joined the global Earth Day planning group, which was being held in Seattle. The focus that year was energy (which turned out to be mostly about one corporation Enron). Most of the workers were idealized young people who only wanted to get involved with some environmental event. At the time the Kingdome in Seattle was going to be torn down and a new stadium (actually two) were in the planning stages. I tried to impress on the volunteers about the environmental footprint of sports and was greeted with stares of incredulity. How could a bunch of people playing ball possibly effect the natural environment!? Talk about clueless. A new report shows how clueless many are to the facts on the ground. [earth.org]
