What are your thoughts on eugenics? Usually the first thought that comes to people's head is the Nazi attempt to exterminate Jews. Horrifying. But my thoughts are more on the effects of the medical industry on the human gene pool. And you cannot deny that it is a business, much like lawyers, sucking money out of the government, insurance companies, and desperate people. But, I know it's more than that. It's also compassionate persons trying to make a positive difference in people's lives. But, when you save a child with cancer, the compassionate thing to do, and then they have children of their own, what has happened to the gene pool? You have eliminated natural selection, and it is a train headed in one direction, inevitable disaster. Would love to bounce it around in the forum.

As sad as it may be, gene mutations happen in even the healthiest of gene pools, people will always suffer and die. How can we advance in our medical sciences if we don’t have the proper subjects(for lack of a better term) to practice the methods on?

For a short time in the early 1900s, eugenics was taken somewhat seriously in university academic circles. But, when the writings of the movement are analyzed, they were merely racism in a more intellectual form. The movement died for that very reason.

CRISPR technology could make things go in the opposite direction, averting the inevitable disaster. It could also be terribly misused and abused, going beyond correcting genetic defects.
