I find a lot of non-believers still believe in magical thinking in other areas, outside of organized religion. Over the years I have come to identify as a "Skeptic" more than an "Atheist," because I do not believe in the supernatural of any kind.

Our brains are easily fooled and nonsense and pseudo-science are everywhere, so we must be vigilant. I have started a group for Skeptics.

If you are a supporter of scientific method, non-magical thinking, and natural explanations, please come join the Skeptics group. I look forward to meeting you there!

Thanks for creating such a necessary group, look forward to reading good posts and discussions.

I like this group idea. Is there one for sceptics also? 🙂 🙂 Lol!

Only if you can lower yourself to the American spelling. 😉

@Sunishine How low can a man go? I shall grovel, and mutter "c" under my breath!

@Petter the sacrifices! You are noble, good sir.

@Sunishine I've joined. Now to convert the masses. Beware - and don't bother about "p"s and "q"s, mind your "c"s and "k"s!.

I... can't quite dispel a belief that aliens and ghosts might exist.

They are so fun to believe in. It is to let it go.

The odds are in favor of life out there somewhere. Maybe not intelligent life, but life none the less.

Hollywood aliens - NO!!! But alien life forms - YES!! That is scientific philosophy, not entertainment fantasy.

Visiting, abducting aliens?

I agree totally. Every time some "skeptical" atheist posts that we cannot know whether ghosts exist or not, it baffles me.

We've all heard strange noises, caught sight of something in our peripheral vision, or felt a cold chill, truly skeptical people don't leap to the conclusion that it's the restless spirit of some long dead ancestor.

I used to work with a group of paranormal investigators though we walked into every case with a skeptic mindset. Our goal was to debunk and disprove using scientific methods. On one investigation where a family were complaining of having seen apparitions, we found the family had a gas leak in their garage leaking into their house, possible cause of hallucinations ontop of the fact that there had been a sucide that was a suspected murder (it came out on one of those dateline mysteries show, because no one knows what really happened) that may have been the source of suspicion in the family. Another client complained of poltergeist activity with things moving around in their computer room on the second floor of their house, like a computer chair moving and door slaming, we found the foundation of the house became unlevel after one super hot summer, tb that caused this. I won't deny there were strange oddities that we came across that we couldn't debunk that has made me wonder, but even still most things could be. I used to love those ghost hunting shows but now I can't watch them I get so annoyed. Like when they make big deal over "orbs" which generally is just dust with light reflecting off the dust. Digital cameras are the worst for tricking you, so we used older cameras recording on cassette tapes (amazing what you can get on ebay). The is if you go in believing that there's a haunt you will find "evidence" that supports it, if you go in a skeptic you will normally find evidence that proves you were right to be skeptical.

How in the world did you luck into a job like that?!

@Sunishine I looked around online.Found a local group sent an email. I used to do tarot card readings, to show people how easy it could be to manipulate belief in these things. So we were all a group of skeptics who wanted to debunk maybe help a few scared people feel a little safer in their homes and we all got along. I wasn't really clear, it wasn't a job, more like a hobby. We didn't take payment from anyone...though people offered. We used to tell them that our payment was the information we gathered and science. We also always warned people to be careful for groups of investigators that do ask for payment because thats usually a sign of being scammed.

@Terrbeargraphix very cool.

Identifying with labels is a funny thing.
You really can't be more or less of an atheist.

Skeptical though and reason is how most of us remedy , so it's funny to see atheists that believe in other magical crap.

I hear you.

I am more comfortable with the Skeptic label, because, to me, it covers more than just how I feel about theism.

Yeah... I'm amazed sometimes at people who realize religion is bunk, but yet still believe in Psychics, or Astrology, or Karma, or crazy conspiracy theories, etc...

@Donotbelieve Yet so many still do...

Throughout the Gospels Jesus goes around casting out Demons.
Do Demons exist?
I am confident that demons are imaginary creatures.
Is it a miracle to cast out an imaginary creature?
If the casting out of imaginary creatures demonstrates the validity of Jesus' miracle power, then it casts serious doubt on all the rest of his supposed miracles.
My Christian friends......if you want to believe in Jesus' miracles, I fear that you will have to argue that Demons actually exist.
The funny thing is that Christians do believe in Demons

I don't know how many times I've had to endure listing to my inlaws dismiss their bad behavior (brother in law strangling his mother, drunken rants and domestic abuse, drug problems etc.) On their being possessed, refusing to take accountability for their actions. My all time favorite "witchery" and being cursed. I lost it one day after listening to one of them say about her sister in law "that woman did a love spell on my brother, shes a witch!" And I just said sarcastically "yes, because hes such a prize that no woman can resist! With all those glorious foodstamps! And hes just sooo good looking warts and all! Dont worry shell be done with him soon, shes saving all her powers to work her magic on Tony Romo, for that mansion and his millions(they thought he was the perfect man at that time)". Yes I always laugh and say it is funny how only Christians become possessed, one would think us atheists would be easy pickings for possession, us without all that holy protection!

I see you have a good understanding of Christian nonsense. Remember Flip Wilson's refrain ..."The Devil Made Me Do It""@Terrbeargraphix

Hope your group is successful.

Not me. I'm all in for science and science does not factor in any of that nonsense.

I used to ghost hunt. I'd still ghost hunt if I had the time. Do I believe in ghosts? I haven't found anything to indicate that I should. Do I believe in the POSSIBILITY of ghosts? Sure. Just because science hasn't proven it doesn't mean we won't discover something in the future. And I've had some bizarre things happen to me over the years that I can't completely dismiss.
I'll stay skeptical of the existence of anything until proof comes to light that indicates I should believe in it.
And that goes for aliens as well.

I am curious. What makes you give credence to the possibility of ghosts, while dismissing things like angels?

@Sunishine A lot of it depends upon how "advanced" your idea of a ghost is. Is it just some sort of residual energy that hangs around but has no direct interaction with anybody? That doesn't even require a consciousness meaning a ghost would really just be like an imprinted memory, possibly attached to some object.
Really, my hypotheses about what could be behind ghosts (that is, whatever the entities people ghosts) all center around the presence of energy, particularly electricity since our brains are basically electricity. I think it's possible, although highly unlikely, that somehow electricity that represents a consciousness or event could be imprinted on something, similar to how magnetic tape is used to record analog audio & video.
But again, I'm a skeptic first and will happily debunk paranormal claims.
As to I don't believe in angels? They are too complex of a form of life, or whatever they are. It's one thing for me to around with the concepts of the scientific traits of electricity and say, stone or metal and extrapolate a possible event that while improbable could still occur. But for me to actually believe in a complex race of mystical, powerful creatures that reside in a place not of this world that have managed to go undetected for centuries, that's not little steps founded in anything remotely scientific or known.
Unless angels are actually aliens, but even that seems pretty ludicrous.
Basically, long story short, I can see some possible but improbable scientific explanations for something that could be called a ghost, but I find nothing to even start off with that let's me put angels in the realm of science outside of the neurons in the brain misfiring and causing folks to have delusions and hallucinations of things that aren't there.
Sorry for getting so wordy. Hopefully you actually read all this and even more, I hope it makes sense because sometimes I just go on and on in a stream of consciousness blathering...

@RottenArsenal I did read and understand it. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

I have an open mind.

I think it's possible that there may be some form of life after death... Something we don't understand. Or maybe there is nothing...

Things like that.

Yay!

Carl Sagan's book, "The Demon Haunted World" explained every odd thing I had ever experienced. It was a relief to no longer feel half nuts.

Good old Sagan.

Such a good book!

@skado It had a dramatic cover, too. The police officer who stopped us for speeding did a double take when he noticed it lying on the backseat. 😉

Please note that in Carl Sagan’s last book he suggested that there might be something to telekinesis, and he recommended further study of that phenomenon.

True scientists have open minds and do not hesitate to explore new ideas, even when those ideas seem at odds with orthodoxy.

@WilliamFleming once something has been dis-proven ad nauseum, keeping an "open mind" to it is silly.

@WilliamFleming Absolutely!

Everyone's a skeptic until they experience real-life things...then not so much. So, to me, a skeptic is just someone who's never had any real world experiences with the supernatural or non-human entities.

That is terribly dismissive and patronizing.

Experiencing something that is supernatural beyond a shadow of a doubt would not make someone into a non-skeptic. Skepticism demands only the truth. If the supernatural weren't so dubious, skeptics would still be skeptical of all manner of other questionable claims.

@Donotbelieve good point.

@Sunishine boohoo. Just saying it as I see it. I am not a skeptic because of my experiences. If you can relate, great. If you can't, great. Still doesn't change my view.

@Sheitelhau Again, if you've had bonifide experiences, there is no "dubiousness" involved. You know what you know and others can either accept it, or they can kiss your ass. Either way, you would be no longer skeptical.

Your definition is dismissed.

@GuyKeith Oh, no! I'm crushed! Some guy I don't know dismissed me! How will I EVER get over it?

Which means everyone, since it's unreal!

@Clauddvon Try prayer.

@GuyKeith I'm trying to cut back. Thanks, though.

@Clauddvon No problem.
