Why are people so desperate to be diagnosed with a mental health issue ? Why can't they just admit they are just asreholes ??

They don't give you drugs for being an asshole! DUH!

Lol ....

True for about 80% of cases in my opinion.

Because they don't want to be held responsible for their assholery. They see how folks with actual mental illnesses are being given proper consideration and mistake it for a 'get out of consequences free' card. But the thing is, folks with real mental illnesses know there's no such animal.

@NotAndrew
That's her opinion.

It's easier to have a problem or issue than to admit one is an asshole. I'm not knocking people with true mental health issues; there are many suffering from horrible ailments that are not of their own doing. However, I do agree that some people use mental health as a reason to be a horrid perosn.

I'm hoping you meant this tongue-in-cheek. If you've ever experienced the devastation of being in the pit of mental health issues you wouldn't joke about it.

It's the self diagnosed people I'm having a dig at the ones having a shitty week then claiming to be bipolar or PTSD from a shouting match in 1992

@Simon1 thank you for clarifying that. I understand more what you meant in your original post.

Wow seriously. This is mega uncool. I would like you to explain. Most people with MH issues are seriously tortured. It benefits them not one iota. They are excluded from much of society and many are totally isolated from family. People with MH problems live up to 20 years less than the rest of his and even their lives are not good ones

I know and agree also you are not on Facebook you go on there and "everyone" is suffering with something people claiming to have PTSD for the most trivial of things .. people who are truly suffering don't announce it to the world or total strangers on the net .

@Simon1 Simon, I am a mental health nurse. Actually I am an advanced clinical prac these days. It is not possible to self diagnose. I cannot diagnose although I can provide a 'working diagnosis' until a consultant confirms. No one would manufacture an illness if they understood the utter devestation on mental illnesses. In addition remember that 1 in 4 of us develop a MH at some point in their life. It doesn't help to say this.

@Amisja trust me people are doing this . Actual conversation. I have (insert mental illness) I can't help acting like this ...what has the Dr prescribed ? .....nothing he won't he's useless (insert excuse) . These people will then say I looked up my symptoms on the internet I must have it ..... These people have no clue about true mental illness and are looking for attention on social media they complain about about whatever they think they have and then brag about how such a fun and fulfilled life they have and provide pictures . As you say people with mental illness are crippled by it these people jump on planes and have shopping weekends in foreign countries on a whim .

Gives them a reason to be arseholes !

I have to agree with you that there are plenty of assholes in the world but one of the main symptoms for most people suffering from mental illnesses is an inability to accept that they have a disease. Those who suffer from schizophrenia like my younger brother are classic examples of deniers of anything being wrong with their mental state, it's the world that is insane and not them. You can find out more about mental illness and how to deal with members of your family who have a mental illness at NAMI [nami.org].
My wife and I took their course after my younger brother threatened to kill us during a particularly bad psychotic episode. The stigma around mental illness is still out there but it keeps getting better as more people become educated about the diseases and how they can be treated.

This is how I perceive genuine mental illness . What I'm trying to get at is all those on Facebook who have a shitty day then claim they have bipolar or once had a screaming match with a stranger and have PTSD all self diagnosed by the way

@Simon1 Oh that Horseshit, I agree, everybody has a condition these days, I get it. I often feel I may have a bad case of Dontgiveafuckitis, it happens to me a lot and got much worse after I retired. 😀
