Took these pics last night (after dark) of my beehive...they're doing a behavior known as 'bearding'...it means their numbers are high and they have to go outside to help keep it from getting too hot inside the hive...last pic is inside the top of the hive...looks like it may be time to add the honey super (another box on top) so they have room to expand! ?

I've always wanted to keep bees. And a few goats and chickens. For now I'm raising children, the livestock will come later!

Speaking as a mom myself...livestock is easier!?

Went out a bit ago and popped open the top of the hive for a quick peek....(most of the bees are out foraging, so less crowded than in the evening)...still lots going on! I need to suit up and do a complete inspection...get eyes on the queen, check laying pattern, etc., but today is not that day...yet.?

Would it hurt to put a fan on low at them?

No idea...but most hives are out in direct sun all day and they do just fine. Mine gets at least some shade, so l leave them to their business...Bees survived long before humans got involved!

@Free_2B_Me. hmmm... ok.... I didnt know that.

Think it might be time the split the swarm? How many years have you kept them?

No need to split...just need to add another super. It will be a year in July that l've had them. Their numbers dropped severely the end of the summer and they had not even started making comb in the top box yet. This is a sign that the queen is healthy and laying plenty of eggs!
