I have a general question for all interested in sharing your opinion...
Way back when, it use to be called civics class. My teacher informed us about the electoral college. Well, since that discovery, I've NEVER felt the urge to vote, and NEVER have. Is there a justification in participating in this type of system? Trump and Bush both lost the people's vote. Ideas? Opinions?

You're right. It just doesn't seem like it really matters. I'm totally against the two party system. We need more choice. I liked Bernie but he was so obvious he was threatened to back down. So I went Green. Just my way of quietly protesting.

proportional representation by an educated electorate and we're golden

One person...one vote. EC is antiquated

I apologize if that came off as confrontational

Not voting empowers those who you might oppose.

In what way? Maybe in a truly Democratic society, but with NO power to elect officials WE deem appropriate, and having career politicians to choose from, and our vote meaning squat... I don't see it.

@Hutch your apathy is the problem. If enough apathetic people got off their lazy asses and exercised the franchise, the career politician would be the exception.

@RichE I don't think even you believe that. Furthermore, it doesn't address the fair representation of the individual. And my apathy isn't from being lazy... I'm just not a sheep.

@Hutch so you don't vote for you alderman? mayor? state legislators? governor? congressman? senator? If you want real democracy, it has to be built from the ground up. Your apathy creates top down oligarchy and our burgeoning tyranny.

@RichE I concede on that point, I do not vote at all. I would like to see your evidence of your claim on apathy though...too far fetched.
My abstaining from the little league does NOT address the major league conundrum, so, please stay on point.

@RichE ...on another note... Thank you for your perspective and insight

@Hutch less than 60% of eligible voters cast ballots in 2016. That's quantified apathy. As to your not being a sheep is disingenuous. Tax measures are voted on by the populace in many states. If you don't bother to vote on them, you're being herded.

@RichE I think you're still avoiding the issue of fair representation. And no, it's not disingenuous, it's just a bitter pill to swallow. That additional 40% wouldn't have made a difference, unless it was truly one person one vote, because STILL would have had the EC to make their preference

Hope you don't mind if I bring a little levity...

You must vote. We need you.

Why? As outlined, voting means nothing if in the hands of a mysterious few. How could any vote matter?

@sarahjustme yes, i am.

@sarahjustme so, you can play with the children, but when you get to the big boys,we'll do that for you...why have that mentality? Why not demand a say in the voting process? Do you concur that we have no voice for the presidential election?

Voting is very important, and for more than just the president. Yes, the electoral college can fuck things up, but that's only one piece. We need to vote in people who will represent us at every level, from dog catcher to Senator. It all matters, and is necessary for the system to work. People who didn't vote are the ones who got Trump elected.

Prople who didnt vote got Trump elected? How? Clinton won the popular vote. No, a chosen few has the honor of putting the president in office. There is NO other wsy to spin it! The other elections....possibly, but they're corrupt. Only one person one vote without the EC is not only acceptable, but honest and true to the constitutional values initially created in this country. 2 or 3 million votes less for donnie boy, but the EC spoke up and said...hey, you're doing it wrong! And now...well, Freakin Trump...BECAUSE of the EC

@Hutch Trump's popularity is consistently way less than 50%. If everybody had voted, we wouldn't have had to worry about the Electoral College.

@tnorman1236 so, with that statement, you're saying that it takes more...more than the 2 or 3 MILLION more popular votes to sway the EC that may or may not accept our preference. One person...one vote.

ALABAMA!! Apathy is killing this country. Only if people get energized to think they can make a difference will change happen. People coming into the state and getting voters registered and then helping get them to the poles to vote did make a difference.
The Court just ruled forced arbitration is okay.
Little by little the courts are taking away the peoples rights and giving everything to the corporations.
Americans need to lose the apathy before they lose it all.

Again, if the electoral college is who elects the president, and not the popular vote, then how could my, or any vote matter?

@Hutch When the popular vote is overwhelming the college goes with the popular vote. The Bush election was determined in the courts. It is not often the college goes against the populat vote.

@silverotter11 what would you consider 2 or 3 million. It was conceded, not decided.

I don't see the justification of the elect oral vote. We're supposed to be a democracy a vote by the people should be final.

Do you vote?

@Hutch I do. Hoping that it'll make some difference
