@McVinegar If you criminal behavior as aberrant behavior then it would make sense to correct the behavior rather than merely punish in an eye for an eye manner. The roots of criminal behavior are either learned or the result of a mental disorder, the mental disorder can be treated in most cases and the learned behavior can be unlearned but punishment as a solution in and of itself has been shown to be ineffective. Environmental causes of criminality should also be addressed as a root cause because it makes little sense to lock up petty criminals who steal a crust of bread when corporate greed lead to the citizen being hungry in the first place. A banker who breaks the law and steals from his clients gets only a slap on the wrist fine that amounts to no more than a commission on ill gotten gains but a poor man who steals a candy bar gets two years behind bars or longer if he has been caught before. None of this makes any sense but that's biblical morals for you, very Abrahamic.
