Many people in the USA know nothing about this event, which happened only 5 miles from where I live.
Here is the URL to the book that was written by the very first journalist to reach the scene, and who broke the news to the world.
It wasn't until a day after Chris Morris's report had spread like wildfire around the world press that the US government admitted to the incident - they sort of had to.
Four H-bombs from a B52, which collided with a tanker that was re-fueling it, fell upon the tiny and remote village of Palomares. Three fell on the land, The fourth fell into the sea and was eventually recovered, 3 months later, by a miniature, remote controlled submarine. The year was 1966, at the height of the cold war.

I didn't know about that. I'm guessing a lot of other people don't either.

Living near a SAC base at the time WPAFB.... my parents heard about it. I was 16 years old. My dad called me at Culver and wanted to know the school status on preparation for the Cold War turning hot.
Good times!!!!
