Try to put a slightly better than average foot forward, if it is the first date. A 'best foot' for anyone might make a best impression, but will be temporary unless one actually lives it 24/7/365. It's mildly disingenuous to lead off that way. I try not to over-dress, depending of course on the destination.
On a first date it is good to get most of the fundamental, possibly problematic things swept out of the way. I disclose them sooner and save wasting time and hurting of feelings later. Being atheist is a big one for many, so spill it ASAP. If, like me, there are other things one knows to be peculiar to others, there's no better time than a first meeting.
Second dates will be a lot fewer but will contain much higher enjoyment and exciting possibilities.

Shower, brush teeth and floss. Nothing worse than bad hygiene - especially on a first date.

A shower and shave. Have a light snack so I don’t feel the need to rush to dinner. Maybe run through the car wash and vacuum.
Or just brush my teeth and head on over. It kind of depends on if it is a dinner/movie date or go carts/kayaks date.
