I watched the documentary on HBO, about John McCaine. I never voted for him for president and really, never would, but, I think he is an example of what a conservative can aspire to. Even though he is a republican, I admired the way he refused to agree and set a woman straight at a rally when he was running for president. She said Obama was a Muslim, and she didn't trust him. He is a brave, honorable man. When it was over, I went to MSNBC, and Trump was on. I am sickened by the thought that a republican like McCain could not get elected and Trump could.
I agree. I’ve seen a documentary on frontline and he is what we used to know as a Republican. I’m definitely a liberal and I don’t much agree with him but at least he isn’t a racist pig. He works with Democrats. And like you said he didn’t go along with the whole bullshit story of Obama being a Muslim. These new conservatives are just so vile.
I had several strong reactions to this documentary. I agree that McCain came across as mostly a really good man. He made a huge tactical mistake in choosing nutcase Palin as candidate for VP. Had he chosen Lieberman (as he wanted to) he might have won.
The other reaction I had was to the talk about how honorable he is --which was true in many of the situations described. However, they completely glossed over his dishonorable behavior in cheating on his first wife before he moved on to the heiress. It's not the divorce I have a problem with, it's the fact that he was apparently openly involved with another woman while still married. I think an apology or some acknowledgment that this was dishonorable was needed since they went on and on about hos honorable he is. From my perspective, if a person cannot keep their vows to the person who is supposed to be dearest to them in the world, there is no chance they'll be honest and show integrity to people to whom they are not pledged.
The video focused on honor, so I think this was a gaping hole in the discourse.
I agree with you about his marriage. That was very dishonorable. I think there was a bit of discussion about that in the doc, but not much. Still, I felt that he was more honorable than most republicans now. They are extremely disappointing, and the fact that they protect Trump is sickening. The fact that they go to meetings with him and as he calls on them, they grovel all over themselves and flatter him to the heavens, makes me even more sick. I can't believe republicans go along with this. It is like the North Koreans praising "dear leader". At least McCain does stand up to him.
