I would like to emphasize about pharmaceuticals. Not in all cases but in many there are alternatives. Herbs and spices can be just as effective. With just a little research I had discovered rosemary, turmeric, shark cartilage is effective relieving some cancer effects. I was not specifically looking for these remedies. I, in fact, was constructing a poem and wanted to be accurate with the usefulness of these substances. There are many more some that are known chamomile helps to relax to sleep as does melatonin and valerian root. There is an herb called white thorn it is helping reverse diabetes. The pharmaceutical companies do not want the public to be aware of these remedies because it would cost investors big. P.S. for those looking for references it has been some time since I looked this stuff up, it would be just as easy for you to dogpile.com search if for your self.
Valerian root does absolutely nothing for me. Melatonin is a hormone. What do those first three specifically ameliorate for cancer patients? How are pharmaceutical companies hiding knowledge, specifically? You just happened upon these things so the information is clearly readily accessible, is it not?
Like I said it has been some time since I had looked this stuff up a quick search on dogpile.com I found this [anniesremedy.com] they are bound by legalities and have to say may help here is another [herbpathy.com] Again not saying this is an answer but an alternative.
@azzow2 have any peer-reviewed articles? Scientists are funded often by grants and aren’t affiliated with drug companies. Naturally, no one can simply market stuff and claim it actually does something it hasn’t been proven to do. Fwiw, people talk about big pharma, but do you know how much “big naturopathy” rakes in, each year?
@FreethoughtKaty Read the labels carefully on an Rx may cause side effects may not work the same in every person. Do not get me wrong I take Rx and get the flu shot every year. I do believe in drawing salve and vitamin E helps with burs and wound care. What I am saying is you can rub that A off of an aspirin give it to some average person tell them it cures stupid and they would take it.
The placebo effect is well documented and studied by researchers. The body and brain are amazing, if you think it will help sometimes it does, a sort of self-hypnosis. It's basic survival mode, but what you believe, someone else may not, hence placebo effect.
That's a great abstract.
Thanks for sharing that.
There is a name for "Alternative medicine that's been proven to work". We call it medicine.
Even if, for the sake of the argument, we accept your claim that a little bit of garlic mixed with diluted sugar water helped you cure your testicular cancer, we still need to absolutely be able to scientifically reproduce the same results in a controlled environment - over, and over, and over. If we are unable to do so then, at the very least, this alternative cure is unreliable and should not be released for widespread use.
"But it worked for me" is not a scientific statement. It is the pseudo-scientific equivalent of "I know there is a god because I can feel him in my heart and also my pastor said so".
Think that what my main point would be is it you need life saving surgery and the doctor that told you this was only 50% with his malpractice cases you would get a second opinion. Smart people read up on the side effect and the overall effectiveness of the medicine. The dumb people 90% of the world's population take the drug because someone told them to.
When I need my car fixed, I'm going to a mechanic.
When I need a plane that actually flies, I'm asking an engineer to chart the schematics.
When I look for a cure, I go to the doctor.
We trust in experts because we can trace what they studied, where, when, and who taught them. We have proof that they know their stuff. Both the knowledge they possess AND their level of expertise can be checked and verified, which is why people who graduated from prestigious universities are more sought after: there is no doubt that, on average, they are more qualified and knowledgeable in their respective field.
"A guy from the internet told me that my doctor is lying to me because something something Big Pharma" doesn't scan. If you discovered something new, by all means, study it, turn it into a patented product, sell it for profit, and retire while flipping Big Pharma the bird all the way to the bank.
@Karnaph
I am more of an expert with my own body.
I have known myself my entire life. An expert
that just knows me for 15-30 minutes doesn't know me. I know me. I am my own health advocate. Had I listened to "experts" to stay on
oxycodone I would have become a junkie. I researched and looked for safer alternatives, luckily my MD promotes integritive medicine. I take CBD oil for seizures, I don't need an "expert" to tell me that it doesn't work. I know it works.
I don't need studies to tell me that the oils that I use don't get rid of my pain. I know how I feel at the end of the day.
I had horrible side effects from seizure pills and nothing worked. Some experts of neurologists. I had gone to 5, that was nothing but a joke.
Most experts love pushing their pills, but you trust the experts. Meanwhile, so many people have died due to pharmaceuticals. I'm not saying that every pharmaceutical doesn't help some people.
@Wildgreens Doctors dedicate a decade of mostly intensive study in preparation for their profession. Doctors prescribe medications when they deem them necessary. And FYI, not everyone is going to become addicted to pain pills.
@FreethoughtKaty
FYI, I'm very much aware that not everyone is going to become addicted to pain pills.
Why add fuel to the fire ? I would take a look at the CDC website and take a look at the statistics.
I applaud all the self professed experts out there. What are you trying to convince me of, exactly?
That you're somehow better than the people who literally dedicate their lives to their profession, because you "know your own body"?
That just because something worked for you - for whatever reason - you are now qualified to dish out medical advice to other people?
Maybe you're trying to express your distrust of doctors because "they're getting paid for their work, which means that it's not in best their interest to do their job. Instead, they keep everyone sick"?
Do you realize how completely asinine that sounds?
You know, time and time again I make this assumption that as atheists, we are, on average, smarter than the believers, and are better at pointing out bullshit. But no, apparently, the only thing that unites us is our lack of belief in god. Doesn't stop us from believing in pseudo science and conspiracy theories. We might as well question the shape of our planet and the usefulness of vaccines...
@goldenvalleyguy I said "profession", not greater good. Brilliant comprehension there...
One of the greatest minds of our generation - the Joker - said "If you're good at something, never do it for free". I'm not delusional: of course doctors want to get paid. It takes between 10-15 years of studying, preparing and training, with all the associated financial costs, lack of sleep and absence of social life. Yes, they want a return on their investment, and just for the sake of this argument, let's suppose that they're not in the business of treating patients - they're in the business of making money. Do you know how they make money? They treat patients.
Like in any other job, being bad at their profession will not get them paid. In order to be profitable, they have to show results - and the only way to do that is to heal, cure and manage illnesses and conditions. Prescribing medicines to the detriment of the patients in exchange for a payoff from Big Pharma might put money in their pocket in the short term, but in the long term it'll land them in jail.
Of course, if you mistrust the entire system to begin with, then we're talking Alex Jones' levels of delusion.
I am very obviously not opened to alternatives, because if they worked, they would be widespread in mainstream medicine by now, and would not need to be called "alternatives".
I'm not missing the point - you are. This entire thread reads like a page from Infowars: fuck the experts, doctors are getting paid off to keep us sick, prescription drugs keep us crazy, a little bit of turmeric can heal you much better...
I'm being judgemental because this same kind of pseudo science is employed by religious leaders. If we reject their claims about "Getting healed through the word of god" (such rejection is a safe assumption in this community), the same principle applies in regards to others' similar claims. It all basically boils down to this: prove it.
Lol, a YouTube video? C'mon dude...
I use the young living oils for my pain. They included the frankincense and rosemary. Is a safer alternative instead of oxycodone.
Smart, I have constant pain I once took painkillers they never took away pain just made me high. I now use Jedi mind tricks and tons of habanero peppers to help control my pain. I have arthritis in my lower back from an L5-S1 disc replacement.
@azzow2 Jedi mind tricks? That is not real it is from a movie
@buzz13 They are very true, just because of someone exploited the in Hollywood tomfoolery does not mean something does not exist.
@azzow2 Jedi's exist where?
@buzz13 [thecoffeelicious.com]
Not the ones I learned exactly but close enough.
I was on and still am on numerous pharmaceuticals. But I am constantly searching for alternative healthier remedies. I was on xanax for quite a while. I was pleasantly surprised when I had a cup of chamomile tea and had nearly the same sense of calm come over me that I would get when taking a xanex. I have some pretty serious pain issues and I have found natural ways to help, but nothing has completely dealt with the issue, even my prescription pain meds.
I would love to explore the benefits of cannabis, but I know it will never be legal in my state. I've even considered moving where it is legal. I have yet to try CBD oil and wonder if it really is as effective as the real deal.
But I do agree with you. As long as big pharma is raking in the billions, they are going to be pushing these dangerous chemicals. Yes, some of them are life savers. Kind of like insulin...whole other topic here.
Not all herbs are created equal if you try natural do some research on the company selling it because as we all know not every company making products is just in the markets to help people.
@azzow2 I completely agree. I often do my research before heading to Natural Grocers. There are a few supplements I take on a regular basis, and just by trial and error, I have found that I can't just take any of them. Sometimes I spend way too much time at the store, because it was an unplanned trip and I spend time looking things up on my phone looking up the best form. This is also why I haven't explored CBD oils yet, there are so many varieties and companies, I don't know where to start. That's a lot of money to spend on something that may not be effective.
@AlmaFuerte79 Not telling you to use this it am saying look into it wormwood.
Cannabis is my herb of choice. It helps with sleep, relaxation, and improves my mood. Melatonin did nothing for me.
Melatonin either wakes me up or knocks me out. Very unreliable.
@kc_anthony Make sure the company has a good reputation for making quality products.
@CrazyQuilter I have heard some get hangovers - I never had.
@CrazyQuilter I've heard of people getting hungover from cannabis but I don't know anyone.
@azzow2 I do. I work in pharmaceutical research...
@CrazyQuilter So, I was around in those days. Lived in Tempe, AZ in a sort of hippie enclave. I didn't know about cannabis oil or butter but I smoked my share of hash. I've never even heard of a story like yours.
