Feel free to reply to any comment by clicking the "Reply" button.Fundamentalist Christians generally take "on the day you shall eat of the fruit you shall surely die" as a metaphorical reference to spiritual death. More liberal believers see it as a metaphor of the loss of innocence that goes along with coming of age at any level -- individual or some tribal or societal group.
It seems obvious that the original intended meaning could not have been literal since the very same story goes on to relate that Adam did not immediately, literally, die.
As to the contention that human lifespans were once much longer, I think we can safely categorize those as "outright lies" although I've never understood the utility of those lies. Maybe it is just the general notion that Things Were Different Back Then so as to make the contrast between the miraculous then and the mundane now, less jarring. These are epic tales of things that would not happen in experienced reality, so the portrayed reality must be somewhat different, e.g., "there were giants in the land in those days", etc.

What many consider a 'day' in this reference is 'God's day'. In another part of the writings a day to the god is considered equal to a thousand years to men. Believers also confuse the description of death and resurrection alleged as a period of three days because it was written that Jesse 'arose on the third day'. Hebrew day ends at sunrise.
Estimated time of his death was around 3/4 int the afternoon. After sundown would have been the second day already making the beginning of the 'third day' when he allegedly arose about any time after sundown Saturday. There is only about a day and less than a half on the inside..

By blocking access to the tree of life, with the “cherubim and the flaming sword,” God denied Adam and Eve access to the life giving fruit so that Adam and Eve slowly began to die until they died hundreds of years later. It was like being in a room with the oxygen slowly being depleted until death ensues. Eating the “Apple” didn’t cause Adam and Eve to die. Their death was caused by God denying them the fruit of the tree of life, which was essential to their health and ability to continue to stay alive.
Adam disobeyed God. He ate the “Apple.” But was Adam to blame? God said…””for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die."“
But Adam saw that Eve had eaten the “Apple” and she did not die. Adam could only believe that there was a miscommunication with God and the ’Apple” was safe to eat since Eve did not die as Adam thought God had said would happen.
Adam could see that the“”tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise,””, so he ate the “Apple”.
Who could blame Adam? He was given faulty information by God.

And the church world goes on with this nonsense to this very day. The "fruit of the tree" even became oral sex at one point, but I doubt that would have killed them. God works in hysterical ways but without this nonsense there would be no need at all of Jesus. They had to explain why he got crucified and work out a plan of restoration.
Another way would just be for god to have changed his mind. Instead, this nutty Jesus stuff explained the "removing of the curse" that was put upon mankind.
