Horrific reading. I don't think prostitution can be "solved" by legal means, whether that means banning it or legalising it; the only solution is to attack it at the root by ending society's acceptance of women being owned, bought and sold (which, going by the number of brothels in those places where they're legal and the number found and closed down where they're not, is still very widespread) in order to make the very thought of using a prostitute unthinkable for, at least, the vast majority of men. Precisely how that can be done in a patriarchal society which has for centuries seen women as mere chattels (I've heard men sounding really rather proud of using prostitutes, and what they can make them do by paying extra) is the tricky part; continuing the fight against the sexual objectification of women seems the best starting point.
(For the benefit of anyone who was about to inform me that men also use male prostitutes/women use prostitutes/etc/etc, yes I know. However, I'm talking here specifically about men who use female prostitutes, which constitutes by far the largest part of prostitution.)
Your comment is great. I wish I could award it a thousand likes.
The way I've heard some men talk about prostitutes (female ones) makes me question their motivation. "I'd like to know how it feels to own someone for two hours", is something one man said to me.
It prompts me to think there's much more behind the transaction than just the supposed 'sex' they think they're getting. I do wonder if they are paying to exercise their misogyny. That's the pay off. The power they have over a woman is gratification for them.
I don't think society is even talking about this issue because it's uncomfortable and ugly.
@Ellatynemouth That's very similar to what I heard a man proudly tell his friend in a pub, and it was very clear that what he'd been willing to pay for wasn't sex but a period of time in which he could physically express his hatred of women - after hearing a small part of what he'd actually made her do, I left the pub because I was either going to be very sick or smash a glass in his face.
@Jnei
The world has no idea how much some men hate women. We are not even allowed to talk about it.
Women prostitutes have become a punchbag service industry for male anger.
