LINK The Nationalist's Delusion - The Atlantic

A brilliant explanation of how Trump's base can not only be racist and sexist, yet at the same time believe themselves when they deny being racist and sexist. More Republican cognitive dissonace.

"That the legacy of the first black president could be erased by a birther, that the woman who could have been the first female president was foiled by a man who confessed to sexual assault on tape—these were not drawbacks to Trump’s candidacy, but central to understanding how he would wield power, and on whose behalf.

Americans act with the understanding that Trump’s nationalism promises to restore traditional boundaries of race, gender, and sexuality. The nature of that same nationalism is to deny its essence, the better to salve the conscience and spare the soul."

In other words- "Make America great again" is just code for "Make America white again. Everyone knows it. Trump supporters pretend they don't, if they're uncomfortable with that truth.

That was a very good article, albeit a long one. I am particularly interested in the phenomenon of people's memory of their own actions changing over time (of course the possibility of deliberately lying instead of selective memory is right there too). It would be interesting to interview people taped and photographed in public screaming at little kids outside of schools and at lunch counters during those troubled times, to see if they even admit to being present, much less the things they did and said. Perhaps they all had racist evil twins that portrayed them in a bad light? It seems that all those evil twins have experienced a resurrection and are now being filmed in public again - but the instant backlash of their taped behavior is really freaking them out. How tragic to lose one's job over hate crimes and racism - there was never supposed to be any consequences for a white man!

Have you noticed that Trump seems to be doing this memory twisting at an accelerated rate? Its one thing to say that you never said what you said a few decades ago, its quite another to claim you never said what you said a couple months, days or hours ago! Its very weird that his base is eagerly willing to change their minds and memories along with his instructions - straight out of Orwell's 1984. It is fascinating how the people willing to do this are the ones most vocally against removing Civil War monuments because we MUST "preserve our history"! And yet they are happy to ignore the history that they are participating in at this moment - can watch Trump say something on TV one hour, and the next hour claim he never said it. What bizarre times we live in.

He has submitted regulations that have passed Congress and affected a minority, namely Latinos, so he is racist. He wants Roe v Wade overturned, therefore he's sexist. The way his supporters manage the conflicts is through denial. "I'm not racist, BUT..."

@Renickulous It's not sexist to tell a woman you know better than her what to do with her body?

@Renickulous The woman's right to abort an embryo or fetus, that is correct. Brain development doesn't even begin until the 6th week of pregnancy. Until the fetus is viable outside the mother's womb, one cannot speak of a "baby", only of a potential baby. If you're arguing for the defense of "potential people", your next logical step is endorsing the Catholic stand on birth control, since every sperm and every egg are potentially waiting to meet and result in the conception of an embryo. All the sperms you have in you are potential people waiting to meet women's eggs, their other halves. You're denying them the right to life by not mating with every fertile woman you can lay hands on.

Yes, I am engaging in reductio ad absurdem, only because your argument is absurd. This was settled decades ago. It's not your body carrying a pregnancy, and you don't get to make that call.

@Renickulous You're conflating two issues to get to the point you want. A fetus has never been a functioning human. A human adult who has lost brain function, morally I have no issue with euthanasia if that's the family's wishes or if that person has clearly expressed them as in a DNR order. However, the language you use ("Are brain dead people free game to kill" ) evokes the specter of gangs of roaming mad doctors stalking the terminal ward looking for people to kill, which is patently ridiculous.

The important question is: for whom is a person in a persistent vegetative state being kept alive? Not for themselves, since they're unaware of being alive or dead. For whom, then? If the family and the doctors agree that there's no chance of regaining mental function and awareness... for whom???

I wish conservatives would spend this much energy worrying about the rights of those who were already born, and still walking around.

Trump has legitimized the right wing bigots and white supremest. They now feel empowered to openly come out in the open. Ironically this may have been caused by the election of president Obama. It's a sad statement of American values. It also shows a bigoted element of the evangelical group.
