I was in a fistfight over a phone

About a month ago I was in a public library and after I left and got to my car I realized someone managed to steal my phone. I have an iPad with internet, so I used it to locate my phone through the “find my phone” app which allows you to locate and also lock the phone and keep it on until the battery runs out.

I chased the thief for a long time and finally parked next to his car. Offered him some cash to get my phone back thinking it was the safest and fastest way to have the phone back. He instead slammed his car door open and attacked me. I quickly took my glasses off and the fistfight started. I hit him several times at which point he surrendered and handed me the phone back. I thought it was over, but as soon as I put my glasses back on, he tried to hit the glasses’ frame to cut my face, the glasses flew away and we started another fight. I won, picked up the glasses, jumped on my car and left.

Why did I chase? Because I am 42, living on my own, separated for about 1.5 years, full time student in CRNA school, not allowed to work while in the program as the program occupies 7 days a week and is absurdly demanding. I can’t afford to pay for another phone while still paying for the one that was stolen. I have no insurance on the phone. I thought chasing and offering money would be fairly safe.

He could have had a knife or a gun, he could have won the fight and kept hitting me once on the ground... So many things could have gone wrong. I only reported minor injuries, but I was lucky. I am pretty big (6’5”, 250lb) but in a fight it’s not always the biggest who wins.

What do you think? Comments and poll answers appreciated.

You struck a blow for reason. sorry for your experience.

It they catch the dude, i hope he gets deportation. Sahara desert, naked, is my choice.

Where did he say the thief was not a U.S. citizen?

After you reported it stolen (which you did not mention you did?) the police would have recovered it for you.
What if he had pulled out a gun?
Or, what if he had been seriously injured (hitting skull on a curb, for example)....you could find yourself supporting Him for the rest of his life?!
I feel you were Very foolish on all levels. "Things" are not worth much in the long run, and this could have gone so horribly wrong. What do you think the police are for? Do you not pay for them with your taxes?

The police would not try to find my stolen phone. They are lazy.

@Carin if you had a location, they most certainly would have sent an officer escort with you! You did not even ask because you would rather become a paraplegic, or create one. Over a "thing". Shame on you!

@AnneWimsey I was not there. They stole it from my car & were calling one of my friends from it. Shame on you for being rude! Happy to block you--I get too many notifications.

I voted you took a big risk but did the right thing. Sometimes we make split decisions and have to size up situations quickly. You already know this could have turned out very badly had the person been armed. I'm really really glad it worked out this time.

Maybe the right answer is supposed to be that you should have called the cops, but I'm not convinced that it would have helped you. Glad you were able to get your phone back without things getting worse!

Thanks! I appreciate your support. I feel a little less of an idiot. ?

Yeah. I thought about the cops. I called them once for a fight in front of my house, they never came. Once I finally caught up to the thief I wanted to solve as fast as I could by offering some cash ??‍♂️

@Lucignolo How is he going to call the cops when the thief has his phone?????????? He did the right thing....except he needed to have a tire iron or baseball bat where he could reach it quickly when things went south.

@SkotlandSkye Because nobody else in his vicinity had a phone? He managed to activate the Locator feature.......and what if the other guy had a gun?

@AnneWimsey He activated the locator on his iPad. He was alone and too busy following the thief to ask random people to use their phone. Finally, you make a great point as to why good people should get firearms training and concealed carry licenses.

@Lucignolo The cops had zero interest in my stolen phone.
