How many Careers have you had?

How often have you changed careers in your life? I'm not talking about jobs, but full on actual career change from one completely unrelated field to another?

I started in the Navy doing mostly electronics.
When I got out of the Navy I tried factory work. I became a bilingual supervisor working in a petroleum and plumbing chemicals manufacturing facility... until I spilled 5 gallons of pure caustic on myself LOL. Don't worry, no scarring. But it wasn't a pleasant experience.

I tried Sales. Commission only, sometimes with a "draw". I did door to door, retail floor, cars and telesales. I wasn't bad at it but didn't like the high pressure tactics required for the job.

For 10 years I was a credit/collections specialist who specialized in resolving corporate disputes and was eventually promoted to judgement executions where I would seize assets, do repossessions and garnish wages.

But wherever I was, whatever I did, I became the group's go to guy for anything computer related. In my collections job, I had a weekend gig doing the backups to 3M tapes. Finally in 1990 I gave into the darkside and have been doing full time IT ever since.

Alongside that, I've also got the most unimpressive set of academic credentials in biotechnology. I've worked in Pharma doing both the science as well as the instrument maintenance and computer configurations for things like high powered microscopes, chromatography (really expensive coffee machines LOL) and DNA/RNA analysis.

So what do YOU do in your spare time? 😛 LOL

My very first job was Factory Job in sorting stuff, they offered me position full time but my Mother prevented it saying i should go to school. So I left and went to College. I finished RN studies in little over a year. I wanted to go to University but...this was not meant to be.

I worked as a personal Support worker for several years until I finished College. This surprisingly ended up being interesting for a while as they send me to 'high profile' cases. I ended up meeting few politicians this way including Ellen Fairclough, first woman to serve in cabinet in Canada and several non high profile people who were deemed 'difficult' to please and equally interesting until I injured my lower back.

Meanwhile got involved in local Politics and joined group called Hamilton Against Poverty....eventually ended up being leader in group. We advocated for poor with local Welfare office and addressed some poverty issues. I joined Food not Bombs and some other local activists groups....rallied people against M, Harris, pit fight with Union, ended up in papers all over country...well just my photo, with my fist up, no name underneath, but this picture was in nearly all papers here. Several of my letters to editor got published too. But I got really disappointed that M, Harris got re-elected and left Politics for good.

As I was in politics I joined theatre and started learning Improv, until eventually I became Coordinator and Teacher of Basic Improv Comedy. I was involved in over 200 shows of Improv. Started to work in Cafe at Theatre and for a while I was coordinator -Manager of Cafe and Theatre there. It was fun. At this days I also wrote poetry and performed it, started movement with Clyde where we performed our pieces and refused to just read them from paper. It did take hold for a while. Clyde made a carrier out of it, I treated it as hobby. I also learned in theatre how to paint and build stuff as I was helping owner to build stuff there. I loved it. It helped me refine my English as I am not a native -speaker....it worked, I speak English as good as native now...if not better.

After I was 'fired' from theater because owners wife wanted my position I landed job as Interviewer for Telephone Survey company. This too was interesting. I ended up talking with MDs all over Canada and US. I learned a great deal about Diabetes and how MDs form their opinion about medication. But this too dried up after a year or two as Owner retired. Meanwhile I finished College and passed my Registration Exam.

My first job was Psychiatric Nurse. This was life changing. I have seen first hand what Drugs can do to young people and by proximity decided never ever will i go down that road. Then

I started as a Staff relief for Nursing homes and this too dried up after a year and then - Palliative Nurse. They also send me to high profile cases, including a Judge in Hamilton and RSMP officer....amongst some. I worked there for about 7-8 years mostly nights. I got really tired of working Nights...and I eventually moved to Nursing Home or Geriatrics.

Been there ever since last 6 years. I just secured Full Time job at place where I worked PT before. I am also Bargaining Unit for union at my place, and Behavioral Modification specialist....and soon to be Wound Care Specialist.

I miss my Creative days. I have been thinking about starting a hobby but I do not know what I wanna do. XD I have been doing gaming for long time now, but this too is getting 'stale' and I am definitely looking for change. gee I just noticed this post ended up way too long...hahha...sorry!

Hi Suzanna, boy haven't you been around ! it is great to read about such amazing events in your life. Keep it up..........

@ScienceBiker Thank you. I was worried I got carried away!

I have had 2 distinct careers in my long lifetime.....At 18 year of age I entered a career in radio and appliance servicing, and on the introduction of black and white TV to New Zealand I had to learn a completely new skill. in those days, transistors had not been invented so all operations were carried out with thermionic valves, and B&W cathode ray tubes for monitors. I finished up being in sole charge of 2000 square miles of Hawkes Bay territory,. Great travelling country and a very satisfying career.............My second career was as a processor for aerial photographic images. Using VG1 enlargers and eventually finishing up on a Japanese process camera which was so large it covered 2 rooms. The film size was nothing like 35mm film but was a film size of 1 metre x 3 quarters of a metre. The work was very interesting and we produced pictures as large as table cloths. I am very satisfied that I have enjoyed my life.

I suppose the only Career I've had is my current one as an Automation Engineer/Test Analyst but in college I was an undergraduate research assistant for the space physics department concerned mainly with plasma physics as well as an UnGRA for the high energy physics department working on designing circuits for simulating the gathering of data from the LHC.

Now if we talk how many times I changed my major; Teaching Literature -> Teaching Physics -> B.S in Physics(hoping to do research not teach) + minor in astro-biology. Then I graduated and went into the development of healthcare technology and here I am.

As for "So what do I do in your spare time?"

  • Learn new things
  • Program Videogames
  • Write sci-fi, which is also my game's universe(also write my 'beliefs'/thoughts like a philosopher)
  • Read(Almost anything; Textbooks, Sci-fi, fantasy, DIYs) I have soo many books... poor trees =(
  • Hike
  • Rock Climb
  • Cycle/Bike

I've never had an actual "career". Lots of jobs, in varying fields, but never a career.
To me, work has always been just a means to pay the bills.
I never felt like I wanted, or needed, a career. Never had a "calling".

Just one. I’ve done the same job for different companies for 30+years.

I had done a lot of career changes. Working in leathercraft in the 70's was pretty cool with the ladies. Commercial artist, Translator, US Navy Radioman, Government Contractor, Hardware repair, Database administrator, Apple portables, airport, Ipod phone support, Cable, Internet Phone Installer, Bilingual cable/internet support, Health Insurance phone support, Reloadable credit card phone support, other phone support. The most important job I ever did was in the Navy, Cryptographic Material System Custodian, An error would had put me and my boss in Jail. I earned Retirement. So I took it and I love it. And to think that for 3 years I attended college to be a teacher but I realized early enough that I did not wanted to be a teacher.

As a beginner in the career journey, I'm fascinated by the diverse paths we all tread. Each job teaches us invaluable lessons, shaping who we are. The discussion on career transitions resonates deeply with me. It's like life's a marathon, not a sprint, right? Speaking of which, I'd love to hear your thoughts on "details about How to Become an Attorney." The legal field seems like a maze of complexities and opportunities. Sharing experiences and insights could illuminate the path for those curious about this profession. Let's dive in together and navigate these career waters!

Apple picker, factory worker, carpenter, inspector at a power plant, home builder, handy man, computer tech and retiree. After not getting a college education I had to be versatile and keep taking whatever I could get. We always paid the bills.

Lots and lots of jobs, and the transitions have not been clear cut,
banking and finance almost 20 years, numerous jobs
human resources 15 years but roles included finance and IT for a lot of that
IT but that included a lot of teaching
Ecology but that also entailed a lot of teaching
very many individual jobs that were just to fill in, make money, or personal interest to learn a skill, ie baking.

1

Started out as a dog trainer then behaviorist, then had hypnotherapy for depression which sent me off to get my hypnotherapy diploma and certification. which led to Neuro Linguistic Programming practitioner, life coach, Emotional Freedon Technique cert ...and now I teach Tai Chi for the NHS

1

The list of careers for me: Assistant Photographer, Photographer, Camera Operator, Screenwriter, Telemarketing, Customer Service, Security Sales, and finally licensed health insurance agent, which I'm currently taking a beating with as the industry is being morphed into who knows what, though I have found this to be one of the most satisfying careers, I'm sort of an advocate for universal health care, which would put me permanently out of a job.

1

"Careers" only one. Software Engineer/DBA, Education Technology Sector that grew out of working with the non-existent IT team at my high school in my senior year.

Also an Army reserve carpenter for 13 years(1 deployed) and retail pharmacy tech for 5 years while going back to school. Like you, I was the computer guy in these jobs too. I was really good at figuring out algorithms to manipulate the insurance company phone approval process, so good in fact, that I was specifically told that I was the only person in the retail pharmacy who didn't have to smile.

I started in the Army, well at the age of 21 anyways.
I did security work after that for 9 years, both armed and unarmed. When new management took over and brought in outside people to run the office, I knew it was time for a change.
That was followed by Sales and Management: Pool supplies and then furniture
I then worked at a Technical college for a few years with admissions.
Now I work in finance.
