Take note of the 4th para. From the bottom. Education is a resource and one that is dwindling in the poorer regions of the country. Lack of education is paramount in the influence of religion. In order for a democracy to flourish, voters must be educated and know of all the ramifications concerning the people and issues on which they are voting.
Three words: campaIgn spendIng reform
From thei legislature; good luck.
It's all down hill from here, at least for a while
So, how’d we deal with the Robber Barons..? My continuing question is, ‘how bad does it have to get before the majority (an electable majority) does something about it?' The feeling I’ve long gotten from those who’d consider themselves ‘the little people’ is their allowing things to remain the same in order for them to eventually ‘strike it rich,’ too.. They assume (and it’s actually fed to them) impediments to unlimited wealth might trip them up on their way to the top … of course, too dumb to understand wealth is either stolen or inherited and rarely if ever earned..
Some tend to view wealth as royalty, then sucking up while eyeing the crumbs... And lets not forget the cultural stratification, even in the US ..where ‘we have no class distinction.’ Apparently, many are simply willing to subordinate themselves to perceived power.. And then there’s just plain dumb … as they’re not going to read that ..and wouldn’t/ couldn’t understand it if you wasted your day trying to explain it…
I tend to forget religion ..and suppose there are millions within this nation who simply assume the wealthy have ‘been Blessed’ … and that being poor and getting poorer is confirmation of their ‘having sinned’ … thus deserving their lot in life.. Well, in their rush to twist the laws of this nation to support their religious delusions -- their puppeteers are laughing all the way to their Swiss Chalets
One basic drive in humans is simple "greed". The problem is that many on the top don't see the problems this inequity creates. Some, likes Allen and the Gates (William the father is always pushing for a state income tax for the wealthy and the stupid poor reject it because they feel it might "trickle down" to them).
Eventually this will lead to a revolution. It always does and I fear the tipping point will be the crash of the stock market.
What happened in Alabama still gives me hope. It will take people like on this site to work to educate and inform the ignorant. Some will never get it but enough in Alabama did and I hope we see real change in the 2018 mid-term elections. How many on this site called there representative in congress and the senate about trump refusing to institute the veto proof sanctions against russia? I did.
I wish I could believe that. I see the ruling party as constantly trying to maintain the status quo through tricks and shuffle games.
I remember years ago a politician I really liked. Remember Sam Nunn from Georgia (yes he did have some issues)? He was asked to throw his hat into the ring and he declined. He said he was happy where he was at and to go higher would mean too many compromises. Imagine what our 2 senators are feeling right now? Eventually the power game corrupts and one is in it for what one can get out of it. Yes, Democrats could maybe stabilize the problem but Victoria's chart was made during Obama's time. Corporations ultimately run the show in this country.
Thank you for the part about taking more concrete action. I wanted to share something I just received and that comment helped motivate me to do so.
It benefits government to have the majority of the impoverished ignorant and ingrained in religion. They are easier to manipulate and control.
I see the religious fanatics are the ones giving support to the trumpers. It is the religious leaders who want power and, yes, they give their support to things that they say is 'sinful'.
Well here is a topic so dynamic in our everyday lives . Since the tea party invasion, it has gotten much worse than before. Now we see Trump appointing a thick swamp. The fact that we mention this today is because the middle class is learning they do have a say, I for one was very proud of Obama and believe we are going to stop this madman and eventually go completely socialist.
I consider myself middle-class and live in an area that values people's right to speak, so I never had to worry about losses of my lifestyle.
However, I am concerned about future generations and have been lucky enough to find like minded organizations that felt the same. I speak out, give money, time and energy to promote what should be of value for all life forms. I just received an e-mail on how my small involvement helped stop a major attack on our environment. I am thinking of submitting this to the group as an example of things many of us can do which can make a difference.
Historically complete socialism doesn't work, so how is that going to work exactly?
We Americans wonder why the middle/lower class have no representation? It does sicken me what we tolerate. Politicians are more like Commodities that can be bought and sold.
Unfortunately, the middle class are not motivated to take action. Why should they? They have what they need to survive so why rock the boat.
One thing that is not mentioned (but is a huge motivator for the problems of today) is the influx of poverty. The wealthy get a large portion of their wealth through exploitation (look at the wealthy plantation owners of the pre-civil war era). They need to bring in more low skilled, wage and controllable workers. Since slavery is no longer allowed where does this class come from? Mostly immigration especially from those in developing countries. When one imports poor people why should one be surprised when the poverty rates go up? We say we want to help people but then talk about how they do the work others won't. In my book that's called exploitation!
@Fanburger This model has been the one from the beginning of time and still applies today. Enlighten me on the "new modern" model?
