Why do you think Atheism is becoming more attractive to millennials?

Younger generations are identifying as less religious. What do you think caused this shift?

The millennials are now able to see and hear atheists online who are presenting logical reasons for why religion is irrational and a dangerous concept that needs to be discarded for atheism.

It's because of multiple reasons. The development of science has brought about the eradication of myths. Education is also responsible I think; but it is the sheer connectivity of people all around the world due to Internet and other similar technologies that has a greater impact on people. They can now know about other cultures and their beliefs like never before. This has brought in them the question of the validity of their own beliefs. Internet has also made it possible to access unlimited information, educating more people on these stuffs. Here atheist advocates also play a role.

The movement is not new. In 1972m Jean Jacques Revel wrote a book entitled, WITHOUT MARX OR JESUS. Revel, a French journalist, described how (particularly in Europe) people were becoming intellectually, emotionally, and culturally mature enough to realize that they did not need either political or religious total system ideologies (ideologies which purport to include, explain and control everthing0 to find meaning, purpose and identity in their lives. That realization now dominates in much of Europe. It has been slowly gaining strength here in the US for well over 50 years.

Please allow me to add my two cents:

As early as the 18th century, the so-called Age of Enlightenment or the Age of Philosophy, people were discussing ideas which include the monarchy, religious authority and individual liberty.

At the "turn of the cemtury" (take note millennials,1800s going to the 1900s, no Y2K Bug yet) one very popular "practical thinker" - with sincere apologies - was Charles F. Haanel, from who's writings inspired Napoleon Hill and others who came in after the two major World Wars that weren't religious - they were caused by greed, insatiable greed for wealth and power - these great thinkers and writers include Claude M. Bristol and Uell S. Anderson (USA), James Allen and Dr.Wayne Dyer to name a few.

And with due respects to the women and the girls in this "A" Community of ours, I can't retrieve any female author's name at this moment from my 62-year old memory bank.

The massive amount of scientific information available online that disproves a lot of religious claims.

Yes bro that's true

2

Might it be because they see and are confounded with their parents genuflecting, holyrolling and drinking the imaginary blood of some hell preventing savior who committed suicide to make things easier for to manage life.

Pardon me sir, reading your comment, am I right to interpret the "hell-preventing savior" committed suicide to make things easirer . . . ?

But I agree that the millennials might be confounded and confused with their parents genuflecting and holyrolling. They might even find it funny and amusing.

Because religion never made any sense or had any factual basis. As we learn more and can explain more and more, there is much less need to rely on supernatural explanations for the unknown.

Yes, most of the youth find no sense in religion. They just hang in there out of respect for their parents, I hope. But some are courageous enough to express their sentiments - at the risk of not getting their allowance for their Saturday night out.

the western youth are better educated and less indoctrinated. The hubble telescope plus the particle accelerator have done wonders for rationality. Even a muppet knows nothing can control 7 trillion galxies

The Rainbow Connection! here are some lines, w/apologies to writers Paul Williams and Kenneth Ascher:

What's so amazing that keeps us stargazing and what do we think we might see?
Who said that every wish would be heard and answered when wished on the morning star?
Somebody thought of that and someone believed it
Look what it's done so far
So we've been told and some choose to believe it
All of us under its spell
Have you been half asleep and have you heard voices?
I've heard them calling my name
We know that it's probably magic

I think it's because millennials are actually able to think for themselves especially with the aid of unlimited information at their fingertips 24/7.

Unlimited information literally at their fingertips any time anywhere!

1

Less worry ...less weight you have to carry in your head... It's taking the parts that are not needed and running it in a more stream line manner. We are driven to do things faster and the quickest way is to knock out the stuff that dosent add up.

I think my eldest son, 19, and his kid brother, 8, will both agree with you. They keep telling me, "Dad, there's always an easier way to do things." I believe they're right. And so are you.

2

I have to agree that access to vast amounts of information practically instantly has made a huge difference, They are now not so gullible as previous generations.

I always like to think that these young people are so lucky to have vast amounts of information practically and literally in the palm of their hands which took us, parents and elders, some 50 years to accumulate.

But the deluge of information also have a downside if they're not guided, sincerely and diligently, by well-meaning persons most specially by the parents.

2

Common sense along with access to information and opinions on the internet. Religion has had an unbelievable run and they have been able to most of the people all of the time, if they didn't they just killed them, but now the momentum is with the secular and the atheists. Religion will never die, but it's lies and power will never be the same again.

Access to information is a big factor. But on top of that is Common Sense.

It's true that religion has had an unbelievable run though I'm not amazed. Current stats show the "Unaffiliated" are 15% of the world's population and it seem that the variables to be used for their growth are on the wild side and not the "standard" factors.

1

Easier access to information, a lot more of those 'I wonder why...' questions are a mere google search away.

Curiosity.

"It is doubt that changes things." - John Patrick Shanley

3

Because of abuse and religious harassment is much like sexual harassment. People who weren't abused by religious figures taking advantage of power are just as put off by obvious charlatans bilking people for money. I'm stumbling upon a greater scandal of how people have used religion to sexually abuse and enslave since the 1970's.

Religion is probably the most lucrative and most profitable business in history.
There has been documented physical and mental abuse by the religious long before the Mayflower docked in Plymouth Bay.

2

I find that to be a positive trend but I don't believe it's happening for millennials in general as much as it is millennials in the US. Which brings us to the question of why so many people in our country believe at all while non-theism has taken strong root in the comparable countries of Canada and the UK.

and most of europe, australia, china Russia
and to some degree south america

America is the entertainment capital of the world, every conceivable form of entertainment, be it wholesome, sex and porn, addictive substances, the great divide between the North and the South, the hillbillies and urbanites, racial and gender discrimination, and, yes, the biggest of them all - religion.

2

Less exposure to church I think...

Deviants coming to their senses to challenge religious authority because of easy access to information.
