How old is too old

I am 76, and I know regardless of how good I felt, how great a shape I was in, or how intelligent I could be.....I would not be fit to lead the nation as a president. I have watched presidents age before my eyes, at least the ones that have seemed to take their responseabilities with seriousness. And was wondering if others shared my concern that older canidates should not be considered.

they prez candidates over 70 should be examined by a psychologist & be tested to eliminate dementia/alzeimhers. particularly if they run for a 2nd term.
no doubt in my mind that reagan wasn't all there in either term, but especially his 2nd.

I lived under Reagan when he was Governor of Calif. And gave him credit for alot of the good things he did...Later realized he had picked some really good advisers.....During his Presidential terms,I don't think his choices were as good, and that he gave them too much influence in his policies.

No, I think it depends on the individual. I really tend to think we need to lean toward older candidates rather than young ones.

No, I do not share your concern. All that life experience and you want to waste it.

Not really...perhaps a great source for advisers,

So long as mind and body are in working order I would not see a problem with older candidates

yes, but who knows?

@callmedubious Roosevelt did ok till very close to the end

@callmedubious my concern exactly.

@HankSherman Fix it as the problem occurs

@ShadowAmicus Is that like "give him a chance"?

@HankSherman If a candidate sounds half drunk, struggles with balance, has trouble with logically putting sentences together - let them retire gracefully - but some old people have a brain like a scalpel - let them use them

@ShadowAmicus fantastic...put them in charge of your country

@HankSherman we have over the years/ Winston Churchill was born 1874, making him 65 when he became prime minister at start of WW2 and 77 when he took the post again in 1951 ... he did ok

I worked for an attorney that was 86 years old. He could easily have been president. The physical aspects are one thing..as long as the person is sharp, has experience and wisdom from living a full and varied life, he or she is way better than what we have now.

A good leader hires people with the missing pieces of their own background and skills...several generations of people to guide and carry out the policies and plan.

I think the bigger question should be why would an older person do it? I wouldn't want the responsibility and stress...duty to country? Ego? Make money?

I have no qualms over the age of any of our justices either...the older the wiser...besides, put an older candidate in as president and a younger one for VP...if the pres dies in office, make sure we are going to like the VP just as much...

Thank you for your reply. I agree that a good leader hires good people, just concerns me that the very best are only there for as long as that leader is there. And as I have so often seen, the VP is picked for their draw on the votes they can bring to the table, rather than their views on policy...

@HankSherman Which makes this election a bit different....I think most voters are aware of that...it will be pretty critical that the VP is one that can draw votes but in the background, we all know it might also mean that he or she will also have their own policies in their back pocket..wink wink...

I am also 71, and feel that an active, fit person (like Bernie!) can be pretty ageless and has wisdom & experience as well.

I also have respect for the wisdom of experience...just find it hard trusting someone getting on in years, to not falling on the hard times of age, and haveing to rely on their choice to lead the country....knowing that in all probability their choice was based on drawing votes from the other side.

I agree, unless you're really voting for the vice president

Thank you

Agree...the VP in this one will be just as critical...

One third of the voters will vote for trump, one third will vote for a Dem. The other third will determine the election. It's imperative that a moderate run on the Dem ticket. I would rather it be someone younger but I feel this would be tragic for our country if trump won a second term because of a young "socialist" was the Dem candidate. I believe not everyone ages the same and some older can benefit from experience. I'm 71.

Thank you for your reply

Am I understanding that you think a young "democratic socialist" could not win the moderate vote???

@HankSherman Who knows. I do think a moderate candidate is more likely to appeal to the Independents.
