The only thing that could make pot a gateway drug is it's illegality. If you buy weed from a drug dealer you may want to buy other illegal drugs. Legalized marijuana is purchased from dispensaries that don't sell anything but cannabis. Meanwhile opioid deaths are rampant, most of which are pharmaceuticals.

It also gives the authorities an excuse to imprison and ruin the lives of people that they don't like.
