The shelter automatically chips prior to adoption. Two different vets also chipped with first rabies vaccine. Given a choice, I would chip anyway. There are so many sad stories of pets that got out, never to be found.

It's a requirement of most shelters where I live to have s dog chipped before adoption as well as a requirement when bailing your free spirited Labrador out of doggie jail, so, yes, both mine are chipped.
