Any thoughts on NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar live?? I’m a Broadway musical fan and was obsessed with the original version not only for the extraordinary music and lyrics but because I was Catholic. I enjoyed watching the production from my atheist point of view.

One my favorite Jesus based musicals is 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat'. Love the music. Very well written songs. Tim Rice is an amazing lyricist.

I love the score and saw it live when it was new. I watched maybe the first fifteen minutes and then turned it off when I realized there were more commercials than music. I pretty much avoid advertisements whenever possible -- I watch premium cable channels and have ad blockers on my computer.

I semi-enjoyed, but preferred the original music.

I'm sure jesus would be totally jazzed for anything that makes his dad that much money, regardless of who portrays him. Who's to say what the son of god who also happens to be god who also happens to be the Savior should look like. That crucifixion number is fantastic.

Thought overall the production was good. Being live definitely had it's issues. The sound balance was off, and the orchestra was stifling the singers. I thought it was really bad, but then the true Broadway performers started to stand out. While l think both John and Sarah are great talents, and their performances as Jesus and Mary Magdalene were great, I don't feel like they have voices powerful enough to carry a Broadway stage

Ooh. I forgot. I recorded this. Need to watch it. I saw the live musical years ago and loved it. Agree with deb57 regarding Yvonne Elliman.

Webber's best work. I thought everybody did a fine job in the remake, but Yvonne Elliman will always be my favorite Mary Magdalen.

Hooked on Broadway. And saw the revival with Neeley at Ford's threater 23 years ago or so. He looked the same, but had white hair. And saw the movie as a kid. great music.

I have never seen it. Thought it was hysterical that Alice Cooper played Herod for this production.

Enoyed it very much. Thought they did a good job of staging it. Very creative to have the partitions that christ rose through to form a cross as was using glitter for coins.

I like the 1971 movie, and I LOVE the original concept album. I watched the whole broadcast when it was on live, and except for Alice Cooper I though it was fantastic. The musical performances were very good (again, except for King Herod's Song) and the stage and video direction was absolutely fantastic. It absolutely set the standard for live broadcast musicals, and I think it will be quite a while before another live broadcast meets that standard. Regardless of the religious content, it was an excellent performance of an outstanding show.

I'm a musician who's played in the pit orchestra on the original version. I'll play the new one if they pay me 🙂

Didn't watch it. Didn't like any incarnation of JCS.
Liked Helen Reddy singing "I Don't Know How To Love Him" (1971), until I found out what the song was originally from. Even as a kid, I hated all that religious bullshit.

I missed the Event, an ex-gf that is a dancer and a christian gave it great reviews. Not related but in the original 1971 movie the guy that played Peter became one of the biggest stars in porn golden era.

The original movie was made in Israel 1970-1971. An Israeli friend of mine was one of the 12 disciples singing and dancing. The live show stuck to the original score. AWESOME.

The music was great. John Legend was good but he doesn't have a rock and roll growl in his voice.
