United States Senator Gary Peters, a low-key, moderate Democrat from Michigan, is in a very tight re-election race that could decide whether his party wins the Senate. But he’s not the kind of guy who typically makes national headlines. He’s more known for being a dad who enjoys riding his motorcycle and drinking the local beer than he is for saying attention-grabbing things. So it may come as a surprise that with this story, he will become the first sitting senator in American history to publicly share a personal experience with abortion.
I've been with Planned Parenthood for about 4 years and I've heard stories....well....NOBODY has the right to make this decision except for the woman involved. I remember a little girl who didn't speak English. She was possibly 14...pregnant...in a country where she wasn't able to speak with us. Luckily, we have an online translator but the child was so traumatized she just sat with a blank stare. All I could do was put an arm around her while she finally had the procedure. Someone had raped her! We gave her a life she deserves.
I used to go to the Capitol and try to talk to legislatures about this issue. I will always remember the Catholic pro-life lobbyist who said to a committee there should be no exceptions regarding abortion because doctors and women lie. I've often wondered if it was his wife or daughter who found themselves in a life-threatening position if he would think they were lying.
I hope Mr Peters is elected because we need real people with real hearts in Congress.
Frightening story, the fact they would have let her die. Whatever happened to the Hippocratic Oath? Do no harm?
