Until the 1990s many leading citizens who called themselves conservatives were men of honor, morality, and principle who believed in and pursued honesty and truth, preserving principles and beliefs that bettered our society and people, service, constitutional democracy, law and order with justice for all. They included people like Dirksibm, Dole, Brooke, Danforth, Howard Bakerm, Kassebaum, and others. There were others like southerners like Strom Thurmond and many other southern politicians who used the term "conservative" to hide their primary motivation -- racism.
Today, it seems that the majority of politicians and people on the political right who call themselves conservatives are motivated by racism, xenophobia, hate, fear and greed. Thy seem all too ready to ignore facts and truth and to create their own falsehoods, to engage in unpatriotic and unethical behavior, to ignore basic principles of honesty, decency, integrity, and morality. If you are among those, you are not conservative. You are reactionary rabble willing to do anything to serve your own ends.

Bullshit. Since age 18, I have been fighting against conservative Republican racist, sexist, cruel, greedy policies.
Republicans are against abortion rights, birth control, civil rights, minority voting rights, women's rights and gay marriage. They still want to keep women barefoot and pregnant.
Conservatives fought against the Civil Rights Act, Black American voting rights, Title IX prohibiting discrimination in education and athletic activities, women's rights, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Environmental Protection Agency, and want to allow horrendous air and water pollution.

I'm going to say "until the 1980s". That's when the Reagan Revolution decided that fiscal responsibility only applies when there's a Democrat administration, and that a marriage of convenience with far right religious zealots was the best way to get and keep power- the next iteration of Nixon's Southern Strategy. The decision to wage political war based on cultural issues, rather than make an intellectual argument, is what transformed the Republican party into the monstrosity that could nominate and blindly follow a Trump.
