20 years ago on vacation my wife and I helped a woman with her elderly father and her packages.
She was shocked -- "But you guys are Americans. Americans are never nice".

I knew three American Missionaries during my Mormon days, who insisted they were Canadian just for a peaceful life and to avoid being held responsible for Bushisms.

The few times I have ventured abroad, when asked if I was American, I was easily tempted to lie.
