Even worse is the prayer of thanks. Thanking your imaginary friend for something that your fellow humans, animals or nature, deserve a lot more credit for, than you probably have time to give anyway.

2

To pray is to degrade oneself as a human being. If we’re ever to evolve as a species we must stand erect, wipe the dust from our knees and never kneel or bow our heads before anything or anyone again.

It's really very simple: Prayer is Wishing. If you want, Prayer is religious wishing.

What's especially sick about prayer is that it is always an expression of pure selfishness. Even if one wishes for the benefit of others, they are others that the person knows. No one prays for those they don't know. By indulging selfishness, it is pure ego-stroking that increases narcissism and feeds superstitiousness. No matter how you slice it, prayer is pathological and harmful to those that do it. Prayer also harms bystanders who observe this useless ego-maniacal time-wasting and are compelled to tolerate this bad behavior, and incorporate this irrationality into their estimate of the person.

Nailed it.

Nothing fails like prayer

Love that Dan Barker quote!

Yes, that's good. I think of prayer more of a reliance on a (non-existent) outside source to solve problems that can really only be solved by human ingenuity, reasoning skills, cooperation, compassion and other human traits.
