America Without God
by Shadi Hamid

"As Christianity’s hold, in particular, has weakened, ideological intensity and fragmentation have risen. American faith, it turns out, is as fervent as ever; it’s just that what was once religious belief has now been channeled into political belief. Political debates over what America is supposed to mean have taken on the character of theological disputations. This is what religion without religion looks like."

Perhaps people will always fall out with one another. But I still think it is an improvement, if they fall out over something rather than nothing.

( PS. Contrary to what most Americans think, the US is only one small sample taken out of a big planet. If you should visit Europe or even most of the world, you will find that the most secular countries are usually the most peaceful and humane, BY FAR. )

“ Will the quest for secular redemption through politics doom the American idea?”. Probably. But climate change will kill most of us off soon enough.

Lacking an external enemy we turn on each other.

I find this to be true, Tom, but we turned on each other by design of that Cheeto man. It was a divide and conquer move that is still going on.

@DenoPenno It actually started with the election of a non white man as president and festered during the eight years he held office. Trump just put a pin in the boil and all the scum came pouring out. But they have been there forever.
