Guns for self defense, hunting, and other sport is fine. As it is, cops are often outgunned by, say, right-wing extremists trying to overthrow the government, or street gangs.
It has nothing to do with oppressing the population. That's a total myth. If some dictator (like Trump) ever DID somehow gain control over the governments weapons, he or she could easily crush any uprising against it. But that's a total fantasy.
If anybody's going to try to gain fascist power, it would be the right, not the left.

@Trajan61 It needs to be a federal process with no gun show exceptions. A thug from Chicago, for instance, drives out of state to circumvent state or municipal laws. It needs to be nationwide. The right-wing terrorists, though, are BY FAR the most serious threat to domestic tranquility. Should they be allowed to stockpile armories full of military-style weapons? The government is not the problem, it's the domestic terrorists. I'm not eager to live under a right-wing, fascist dictatorship.
