In case you haven't viewed or listened to Charlie Chaplin's speech in the Great Dictator.
They showed it on AMC recently: great film! Made in 1940, while Hitler was still winning big and the U.S. was studiously “neutral.” Chaplin’s politics ticked off the isolationist crowd, many of whom went on to red baiting during the Cold War, eventually chasing Charlie out of the county.
Thanks for the background info...I recall that Chaplin was "chased"...not sure if he didn't leave of his own accord.

@Robecology Maybe a word like “hounded” would have been better, and FBI director J. Edgar Hoover kept targeting him in one of the personal vendettas he was known for. Eventually, Chaplin went to London for a film premiere, and decided not to return because of all the harassment.
