They seem to neglect mentioning the Nubian lion, which was also native to Europe and resembled African lions, but were much larger. I seem to remember Nubian lions were hunted to extinction by man sometime near the end of the dark ages. When you see lions on a coat of arms, it is a depiction of at Nubian lion which was native to Europe.
