In the sense that their languages share common roots, Arabs and Jews are semites. How much weight that should be given in determining how closely the two peoples are related biologically is arguable. Anyway, there is a much more direct way to determine the relationship: genetic analysis. However, even that may not be conclusive, because people with diverse genetic backgrounds can adopt the same culture. Which brings us back to language, which is a cultural phenomenon, not a biological one.

To my mind, when a foreigner comes to the USA, learns to speak English, and adopts American values such as rule of law, freedom of speech, and egalitarian multiculturalism, then they are American, full stop. It doesn't matter what their genetic background is.

Palestinians and Jews have a lot in common culturally, and it goes beyond their common language roots. For instance, they way they hold grudges, and hate, and wage war, and have babies to be soldiers is very similar. And their religions also share common roots. They are both "people of the book." These are important cultural markers. I think it's totally fair to refer to both groups under one short umbrella term like "semite." It's a lot easier to articulate than "superstitious and irascible people of the eastern Mediterranean."
