Difficult to defend but I love a challenge. £40m is a lot of money. You can get a premier league footballer for that. Then its not that much when you look at things like US elections. Not enough to buy you a mayor or a senator. Of course this is not public money. These are corporate donations by well meaning companies that just want the right person in charge. No expectations of pork barrel bills or govt contracts, so youre not footing the bill are you? Just billions of dollars to put a draft dodger in the west wing. Who can make tax changes for rich people.
How much does it cost for the upkeep of things like the washington monument? I heard it was $9m per annum. What happens to that money? Well it`s spent on staff and contactors who then epend their money around. Well what happens to the royal weding money? Exactly the same. most of it will be secuity and staff, just moves the money around. You have your heritige we have ours. This event has the whole world looking at us for what you could get a local DA elected.

Your royal "heritage" is based on exploitation and oppression. The British nobility gained their land by turning free peasants into serfs. Later, they dispossessed these serfs through the "Enclosure Acts." Britain then enriched itself by enslaving Africans. It impoverished India by destroying the textile trade there in order to promote its own nascent industry. In the physical British crown itself, the most valuable jewel was one of the innumerable items stolen from India. Britain then further enriched itself by becoming a nation of dope-pushers, forcing the Chinese government to accept the sale of Opium in the Opium Wars. It then proceeded to steal oil from the Mideast. Etc. Etc...

@Krish55 "Exploitation and oppression" hmm All of what you said is true. Britain did take slaves from Africa and we sold them to guess who? The land of the free. Then we stopped, not only that but we imposed and enforced an embargo on said trade in the 1830`s. A whole generation before the land of the free. As for dispossessing people of their land. Do tell me which of these are you going to give your house back to? Seminole, Ais, Apalachee, Calusa, Creek. Miccosukee, Timucua or Yemassee?
We once served at the pleasure of the crown, now they serve us. We have dispossessed most of the the aristocracy though taxes and now they have very little say. Can you say the same thing about your plutocrats?

Like the cool poet with the well-groomed beard who hangs out in coffee shops all day and drinks cup after cup while bumming cigs off of both friends and strangers.
