Religion has a power over people that is easily corruptible. It has been used for centuries to push the agenda of a few. It is no different today than it was in the time of the middle ages. I dislike it for many reasons, but manipulating people is at the top of the list.
Spirituality is something different. All people must have a belief in something. Whether it's their self or a cosmic being. It propels us forward and allows us to grow in our understanding of life. Religion takes the concept of spirituality and tries to confine it to a set of opinions that only serve a portion of a population- christian, muslim, hindu, buddist, etc. They try to carve out a spiritual "notch" that benefits their followers and excludes all others. Then they embolden leaders to direct their followers to live and serve their agendas as they interpret the "guidance" that they translate. It's such a fallacy.
Thats what my religious youth group did-isolated me from my non-Jewish friends-I brought my best friend who also happened to be Puerto Rican to my youth group to meet some people. When they prevent her from entering I leave the event with her and never return to the group. I am considered an outcast from that day forward.
That's so sad. My experience with youth groups growing up was not any better than high school cliques. The bullies and self righteous "in" crowd existed there like anywhere else. Hated going to those activities.
I don't believe in "spirituality" either.
I think it's a term that gets used by many people to mean many different things. Mostly, I encounter people who use that term to mean that they can't find a church, so they have a "personal" relationship with a deity. Now there are a group of animists who use the word "spirituality" to describe their relationship with nature. Again....it's a very broad term.
That's the thing. Definitions are wholly subjective. You wouldn't think they would be, but in our society's current state, that's what's happening. Everyone is going to define whatever state of being you can choose, as being a certain thing as it applies to them. I have never suffered from any kind of existential angst. I don't feel the need to define anything about myself for anyone. If I'm asked, I'll state my position(s) on whatever. Beyond that, I don't have any desire to make myself "more understood" to anyone. I guess in some ways, that makes me anti-social. LOL
