A thought just struck me.

The difference between miracle and science is that turning lead into gold would be miraculous. But turning gold into lead would be just as fantastic for a scientist as turning lead into gold.

The difference is that the scientist would understand why it happened. Someone who deemed it a miracle wouldn't, and thus wouldn't be able to reproduce it. Once it was reproduced again and again, the miracle would be trivialized.

How about turning failure into money? That's the real miracle.

Just for the record, virtually every railroad in the US operated mostly in bankruptcy and yet managed to pay gilded-era salaries to the higher-ups. Does that count?
