It's almost that time of the year again. Kids' Camp at the local Vet Hospital. I will be bringing Dash the ghost cornsnake once again for Reptile Day. These kids have interest in animal husbandry and in becoming a veterinarian one day. They learn about animal keeping and health, and even observe and assist in examinations and care at the hospital. The Camp always sells out every year, and Dash is a star attraction. He's so good and calm about being handled. He makes a great ambassador for the much maligned reptiles, and kids are much less apprehensive about snakes (and much more excited about them) than the adults (including the vet who owns the hospital). The kids love to hold Dash and get their picture taken with him. My goal is to educate people about the wonder and beauty of snakes, and encourage research and proper care for those interested in keeping them as pets.

I'm so excited I managed to collect some nice sheds from Dash and a few others of my snakes, including my Dwarf (Dumeril's) Boa Akasha, my Amazon Tree Boa Lestat, and my little Goin's king snake Leonidas. I may not be able to take all my snakes to the Camp but the sheds from several of them make some nice show and tell pieces.

Beautiful snake and a wonderful educational experience. Introducing kids to Nature is always a good idea, especially before fears and deep phobias set in. I am envisioning a similar plan of bringing kids to butterflies.
Guided tours of green spaces here in Wisconsin for kids and their families would go a long way in education against pesticides, and providing for the Monarch and other butterflies in the home garden.
Pictured are some shots from around my garden and around WI

  1. Monarch, my garden
  2. Hummingbird Moth, my garden
  3. Diana Fritillary, Sandhill Conservancy
  4. Eyed Brown, Cherokee Marsh
  5. Tawny Emperor, my feeder

I wish this was a thing around here. My daughter would love this..
Well so would I. I used to have green iguanas. Kerbear was super friendly and gentle. I used to take him almost everywhere. I even took him to my sisters church for bible school. The kids loved him. That was about 20 years ago and on of the kids that was there apparently saw me in a store and told my sister at church that he saw me but was afraid to say anything. I guess Kerbear made quite the impression. I think it s awesome.

I would love an iguana but never did get one. Most vets around here don’t do this. This vet hospital is in a tiny community and the vet (owner) runs it out of her house. She’s relatively new to the area though I’ve known her for a long time. As far as I know no one else is doing this.

@graceylou she is awesome!

What a handsome fella ! I had several species of snakes I used to take into local schools, just to disspell the usual fears and mis-information out there. Got many folks to change their views .

Any prejudice is based mostly on ignorance - eh ?
Keep up the good work !

Posted by ZsterMy first Monarch since moving here! I started a butterfly garden two years ago, specifically targeting monarchs and swallowtails.
