The last time I saw one that size there were about two dozen eggs lying on the ground on the bank of a beaver dam. My brother, my best friend, and I interrupted a raccoon's breakfast. We gathered up the undamaged eggs and dug out a few more, about 20 in all, and took them home.
I buried the eggs in a bucket of sand with no idea what species of turtle they belonged to, and about two hours later 15 baby snapping turtles dug their way out. I released all but two. One of the two died within a few days, but I released the other three years later when he outgrew my small aquarium.
This reminds me of a childhood memory. I had a goldfish that I had had for a while. One day I found a small snapper about the same size as yours. I took it home and put it in the goldfish tank. I checked on them a little later. No goldfish. It was a learning experience.
In a pet shop, I heard a young lady explaining to the clerk that she'd just gotten a king snake from a friend, but she needed a cage for it.
She mentioned that she was lucky she already had a corn snake; so she put both snakes in the same cage while she shopped for another. I don't think the clerk was really paying attention, because he had an "oh shit" moment when I pointed out that kings are ophiophagous.
The young woman looked at me with a puzzled expression, and he blurted out, "That's right. They eat other snakes."
She rushed out of the store. I have no idea how that ended, but I hope her new pet wasn't hungry.
was it crabby?
